ALEXANDRIA, Va.—Last month, Interior Design magazine named the Burgess office space, designed by SmithGroup, Best Green Project of the Year. Burgess, an industry leader in Medicare reimbursement solutions, moved to 1701 Duke Street in early February 2010.
“We strive for design excellence in the products we build for our clients and likewise in the work space that we provide for the team that supports them,” says Greg Burgess, President and Founder of Burgess. “We are honored to have won the Green Project of the Year award, and proud to respect the environment as we continue to grow.”
This project met the highest level of design, representing the Burgess brand and mission statement, while requiring construction of no more than what was needed for the space to operate. The materials chosen, including slate, soapstone, wood and cork in their natural state, signify the organization’s stability, permanence and authenticity.
The LEED certified Platinum space maintains a high standard of efficiency and environmental sustainability, with numerous green initiatives. With low-flow plumbing fixtures and dishwashers, potable water requirements are 55 percent below standard needs. Daylight responsive controls, occupancy sensors and dimmers reduce lighting energy use while all energy requirements are offset by renewable energy sources. Some furniture is from Burgess’ previous location, and furniture required by the new construction was manufactured within a 500-mile radius of the site. In addition, 92 percent of the construction debris did not end up in a landfill. Location of the office building is also key, with nearby bus lines, a DC Metro station and a train station.
